El Paso Airport
El Paso International Airport, 6701 Convair Rd, El Paso, TX 79925, USAFacts and History about El Paso Airport
El Paso International Airport is the largest civil airport of West Texas, USA. It sits approximately 7.5 mi/12 km northeast of downtown El Paso, Texas and it serves El Paso as well as Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico.
The airport that is El Paso International Airport was built as Standard Airport, by Standard Airlines, in 1929 for the purposes of transcontinental air mail service. Standard Airlines became a part of American Airlines in the 1930s and in 1936 there was an “airport swap” with the City of El Paso and the airport became El Paso International Airport.
The airport was a United States Army Air Forces training base, called El Paso Army Airfield, during World War II.
In 1971 the airport was extended to triple its former size and a new structure for ticketing and baggage claim was built in front of the old terminal while two concourses were built behind it, making the old terminal the center of the building.
El Paso International has the IATA code ELP and the ICAO code KELP. It is still owned by the City of El Paso and it is operated by El Paso Aviation Department.
It has three runways, all with an asphalt surface, of 12,080 ft/3,664 m, 9,025 ft/2,751 m, and 5,499 ft/1,670 m respectively in length.
El Paso International Airport saw 3,516,911 passengers move through it in 2019, which dropped to 1,491,148 passengers in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The airport’s single terminal building is on two levels. The lower level houses Baggage Claim and Ticketing/Check-in counters as well as the main, or central, terminal section while the upper level takes care of all the departures. The terminal building has two concourses. Concourse A is also known as the West Concourse and it houses Gates A1-A4 and it serves only American Airlines. Concourse B is also known as the East Concourse and it houses Gates B1-B11 and it’s where all other airlines handle their flights.
